Shooting Team Starts out Inaugural Year with Three Titles

The MSU Shooting Sports Team is off to a great start in their second month of operation. The team travelled to two locations, one in Ohio, one in Michigan, for their first two matches as a team.
Tyler Luce, left, places 2nd at October CMP MatchSaturday started off with a trip to Camp Perry, OH for the CMP Monthly match. The air rifle team included Tyler Luce, Susanna Gallani, Shelby Thelen, and Kyle Schittenhelm, while Greg Sabin competed in the air pistol division. Luce started out strong, finishing at the top of the qualification round with a new personal record. He continued to perform as he eventually shot his way to a silver medal in the finals. Additionally, Shelby Thelen scored an outstanding improvement to her personal best.
Following up this success, on Sunday the action pistol shooters from the MSU Shooting Team attended their first ever Scholastic Pistol Program match, located at the WCCA club in Plymouth, MI. The Scholastic Pistol Program is an elementary school through college program that aims to instill values of fair play, compassionate understanding, individual responsibility, sportsmanship, self-discipline and personal commitment while participating in the exciting sport of action pistol. The MSU Shooting Sports Club makes MSU the first Big10 school to participate in this growing nationwide program. Despite it being their first match, the team performed excellently, bringing home a gold and a silver medal by Kevin Jickling and Corick Johnson, respectively. The rest of the team (Madision Hall, Greg Sabin, Chad Wolff, Tanner Pond, Hannah Fogarty, and Susanna Gallani) all produced very good scores as well, showing the incredible potential the team has moving forward.
When asked for comment, Galanni, a founding member of the MSU club, said that she “is obviously very happy for the results. But that is not what I am most proud of. Despite having practiced together for just over a month, our athletes behaved as a real team. They helped each other, pushed each other, and they seemed to have a lot of fun. Starting this new team has been a roller coaster. This weekend could not have happened without the dedication of our coaches and the support of the Demmer Center. This is definitely a team accomplishment.”
The MSU Shooting Sports Club was founded in 2013 as a registered student organization that aims to produce competitive shooters who will participate in the collegiate shooting sports of precision rifle and pistol as well as action pistol.
